Marine Joatton was born in 1972.

She lives and works in Paris and is a graduate of the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (1992)

and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, ENSBA (2001).

Faced with Marine Joatton’s drawings, paintings and sculptures, it is very difficult to know on which foot to dance. What are, or who are, these silhouettes, presences as assertive as they are improbable, spurts of animal and human life singularly between the fray? Antoine de Galbert, founder and president of La Maison Rouge, discovering his work in his Parisian studio, told him in 2005: “You have a choice, you can pursue your research either in Art Brut or in contemporary art”. “I didn’t answer anything at the time, I was a bit lost,” recalls Marine Joatton, who continues: “I don’t do Art Brut, which I like very much. I hope there are qualities of my work that can be found in Art Brut.” Clearly, she happily uncovers, fights and breaks the opacities and chains of convention of the gaze. Graduating from Science Po Paris at the age of 20, she flies to Scotland, teaches French at the University of Saint Andrews, and draws, draws a lot, draws until she decides to follow a sculpture course at the University of Dundee. Then she comes back to France to join the Beaux Arts in Paris. Since then, all her days have been devoted to her terribly free research, radically removed from any censorship of reasoning. In recent months, Marine Joatton has been painting large acrylic portraits on paper. “I like to paint heads, heads that don’t look at each other. I work a lot on the presence of the skin, the coat. I like to have flesh, a real presence of the pictorial matter.”

The Galerie Françoise Besson invites seven artists to invest its walls in an exhibition that goes beyond the manifest event and the instantaneous image of an artistic production marked by a current. No innocence, however, in the selection of the artists who accepted this invitation; seven assertions of painters’ visions: Marion Charlet, Claire Chauvel, Marion DAvout, Marie-Anita Gaube, Marine Joatton, Florence Reymond and Lise Roussel.point of view from which the viewer will make his journey. “Clément Montolio
