What do images of reality do?

David Coste’s work settles on the shores of reality and fiction. Without making the decision to opt for one or the other, he describes new scenarios, as if a third level of reality could exist, halfway between the observation of the environment and the imagination of new worlds. His drawings, photographs and videos show disembodied landscapes, whose structures are dressed with dummy houses, unreal recoloured landscapes or mountains made of cardboard paste supported by an unusual interior architecture, like so many figures in a set… Worrying perspectives where nature rubs shoulders with artifice and habitat with emptiness, a vision of a world where the image is a more certain document than reality itself.

Like a movie set, his work thus subtly draws the place of a story: a world on stilts on the verge of collapse. Here his drawings fade away where foundations should have been laid; there his installations liquefy on the ground; elsewhere the setting is a curtain printed with a mountain landscape… In the gaps of this universe, David Coste introduces the story. The enigmatic titles of his works and his exhibitions are as many narrative beginnings: Entresol, Ici et nulle part, Le laboratoire des prophéties (The Laboratory of Prophecies)? But it is space, or rather the fiction of space that interests him: David Coste’s images return the evidence of a world sure of itself, of its material and its uses. He borrows from the architect, here building a model of the internal structure of a mountain; elsewhere he mimics the archaeologist’s gestures by describing inhabited space in the manner of a wasteland or an object under construction, a non-place where architecture oscillates between the figure of the ruin and a space for the projection of utopian cities for the imagination. His work thus draws a new landscape, like a garden built by our mental projections and our attempts at fiction. In his drawings as in his images, films and installations, reality reveals unsuspected foundations; the urban environment becomes in his hands the unusual setting for a life of fiction or even more philosophical paths. His work thus creates utopian spaces, paradoxical constructions that invent a critical approach to images. David Coste’s work plays with fiction and with the “imaginary of the earth”.

Emmanuelle Castellan et David Coste

09 juin > 30 août 2012

The Françoise Besson gallery is pleased to invite Emmanuelle Castellan and David Coste, who met a few years ago in Toulouse, to dialogue in the exhibition Ici et nulle part. The artists join in the same attention to the image, whether it is a document or a scholarly reference to art, and to the cinema (moving image, image movement), which they use, each in their own way, as materials allowing them to open their artistic approach to spatio-temporal experiences, for the one, pictorial for the other. Ici et nulle part (Here and Nowhere) reveals two singular yet open and generous universes, which will give rise to a new installation in the gallery.
